Staplegrove Youth Football Club Report.

I am pleased to report that the Club has made good progress over the last season, which in playing terms has just come to an end. Of course the teams may have stopped playing and our coaches and managers will welcome the short summer break before they start training late July/early August and some teams will play in 5/6 a side tournaments during the summer to keep their competitive edge. For the officials of the Club the season never ends as we are already starting to prepare for the next season.

This Friday we are holding our annual presentation evening, which brings the whole of the club together approx. 180 boys aged 6 to 16, all of the managers, coaches, assistants and of course many of the parents. Each player will receive a medal for playing for the club during the season and special awards for each age group to recognise a particular playing talent, team commitment or recognition from team-mates. Awards also go managers and officials for work carried out throughout the season.

The club is financially sound and we have recently held our AGM and formed our new committee for the coming 12 months. We hold regular meetings throughout the year, approx. 8 or 9. Copy of accounts and minutes of AGM may be inspected on application to the secretary.

This season after a lot of hard work we have become a F.A. Charter Standard Development Club, which recognises the fact that we are a well-run club with qualified coaches. We have a club constitution and club rules, player, coach, parent, spectator, etc. codes of conduct, an anti-discrimination and equal opportunity policy, a club complaints procedure, a child protection policy and a child protection officer. We have volunteer application forms and procedure to enrol volunteers. We also have a  club development plan.

The ambitious plans for the club, which include as a priority new changing facilities to match a club of our size. We have held meetings with the F.A. Development officer, TDBC Development Officer, we have also met with a surveyor/architect. The Football Foundation has included our club in their plans for substantial funding in 2006.

Before we can obtain any funding we have first to clear several important hurdles. One major hurdle has of course been cleared in becoming a Charter club. The biggest one left is currently being discussed with the Property Department of Somerset County Council who owns the land at Corkscrew Lane. We are currently in discussion to improve the terms of our lease with them, which has 28 years left to run but has a clause that they can end the lease once they have issued a notice period of 12 months. Obviously the FA will not fund any project on this basis, we are therefore seeking a much longer period of notice or ideally have it removed completely.

I am sorry to say that Bryn Evans our Vice Chairman is leaving the club due to other commitments, Bryn will be greatly missed as he has put many years of service into the club in a variety of roles.

In footballing terms all of our teams did well during the season, several teams finished as runners up, and most teams finished in the top half of their league. Our under 14’s reached the cup final losing out in a very close game and our under 16’s reached the semi-finals of the Somerset Youth Shield, losing after extra time to Radstock Rangers, they defeated many teams from the Bristol area on their way to the semi. They did manage to win the Taunton area league, just pipping Spaxton by a single point. The Somerset County Gazette will be printing a full set of league tables this week.

Our end of season ‘Grove’ magazine is being printed this week and when available I will let Geoff Hayes have a copy.
